dropping miscellaneous notes here for future study.
1/19/26: I read about "Undine, Mignon & Thekla" in the intro to Emily Dickinson's Collected Poems and had no idea the reference. So I Googled and found this (via the new Goog AI):
The Characters:
- Undine: From Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's novella (and later operas), she's a water nymph seeking a human soul through marriage, embodying magical romance and melancholy.
- Mignon: A beloved, mysterious girl from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, known for her wanderings and tragic love, symbolizing the yearning for home.
- Thekla: Also from Goethe, a noblewoman known for her fiery spirit, independence, and tragic fate in the play Wallenstein.
